Sixties Soap

Sixties Soap was a fantastic production to work on from a technical point of view. Although it was never going to be  particularly complicated, we were assisted by a director who not only knew what he wanted but also kept things simple - always an advantage when you've only got a week to stage a show! The mutual support and appreciation within the team was always an asset, both during the preparation and the actual production week (particularly on the last night, where just about everything that could go wrong did - mini-disk players, camera and TVs all breaking down during the show... not my fault, honestly!) I appreciated the fact that I was able to get on with stuff without somebody breathing over my shoulder or trying to muscle in on my territory - always a difficulty when you're trying to tech a show.

I also enjoyed the few brief moments I was on stage (although with five lines, it was difficult not to upstage other cast-members with impromptu improvisations!) but I think I reached my acting limit - it was all I could do to remember the five lines that I had...

When it comes down to it, Sixties Soap offered an intensely rewarding experience from a technical point of view.  Golden Door, although it was a very different show, was equally challenging, requiring me to find glo-sticks, UV lights and paint and 20-metre extension leads to support the technical requirements. I still remember the Friday night before the tech... I was up until late making extension cables and working out how to rig the UV tubes in just the right place to provide the appropriate cover! Again, I appreciated the support, faith and full confidence of a director who obviously understood the difficulties that the technical demands such a complex show made on a small and  inexperienced team. I particularly respected the positive feedback made about my contribution to other colleagues - it's always nice to know that hard work has been recognised!

The photographs in this section were taken during the technical rehearsal of Sixties Soap.
