Chris is the newest member of the Drama team, having joined the Department in September 1999 as part of the Specialist School initiative. He teaches Drama, administrates the LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations and organises the Shakespeare Festival.
Chris read for a BA in English Literature and Drama at the University of Sheffield (1991-4). He then completed an MA in Theatre and Film at the same institution (1994-5) before studying for a PGCE in Drama at Bretton Hall College (1995-6). Whilst at Sheffield, Chris wrote, directed, designed and performed in over 30 plays, including Macbeth, The Country Wife and Find Me, which was performed at the 1994 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Chris's first post was at the Abbey School, Faversham, Kent, where he was employed to introduce Drama to a school which had not previously offered that subject. He was responsible for the design of the school's Drama Studio and for the first major school production in over seven years, Bugsy Malone, which involved over 50 students and many staff. Chris was promoted to Head of Drama in April 1999, shortly before accepting the newly-designated position at Egglescliffe.
Chris's initial function was to boost the efficiency of the Drama department by expanding the quality of both classroom teaching and extra-curricular provision. This was achieved through the introduction of team-teaching in many classes, providing a more intensive Drama experience for students in those classes, as well as offering specialist Drama cover for absent colleagues. Extra-curricular Drama was developed through the expansion of after-school clubs and increased output of school productions. Chris's major contribution in this area was the Shakespeare 2000 Festival production of Twelfth Night, which was performed by students in Years 9 and 10 during April 2000.
Chris's role expanded in 2000 with his introduction of LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations. He is also the department's IT co-ordinator.
Chris is well-known throughout the school for his appreciation of Star Trek and sci-fi in general, although he is not related to Mr. Spock (despite popular opinion... that would be highly illogical). He enjoys working on productions, designing web-sites and recording MP3's off the internet. He is the Publicity Officer for the National Association for the Teaching of Drama (NATD).
