This was a key moment in the Drama. About 3/4 of the way through, Bizmuth, who'd converted around half of the villagers and clergy, was persuaded to hold a service in praise of God. Instead, he made a very humanist, anti-Catholic speech. Mel's character, Marguerita, had made it clear that she believed that God was speaking to her. God, it seemed, had persuaded her to cut the Archbishop. This she did, only to find that he did not bleed. However, Prior Walter, the Confessor, who had had his integrity questioned by Marguerita previously, used this to claim that it was Marguerita who was in fact the demon. She was taken from the church by the crusaders (although she was released).
