Egglescliffe
Youth Theatre was launched in its present form in September 1986 under the
direction of Anthony Gears and is now one of the longest-running Theatre groups
in the country. It runs regular Drama, Theatre, Acting and Video courses
throughout the year, as well as two Summer Schools in Drama and Theatre. The
Youth Theatre is committed to providing practical Drama experiences to young
people in the Stockton, Darlington and Middlesbrough areas, particularly those
who have never taken part in production work.
Always
ambitious and willing to experiment, the Youth Theatre has taken on productions
as diverse as Shakespeare (Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream),
Brecht (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui), Dylan Thomas (Under Milk
Wood) and Willy Russell (Our Day Out). New writing is also
encouraged, including the comedy The Dress (staged at the Billingham
Forum in 1998) and the 1999 production of a musical version of Frankenstein.
The
Youth Theatre attracts students from across the region. This year, five
different schools and colleges have been represented, not to mention young
job-seekers and university students.
The millennium production of Animal Farm was produced, as the Summer School shows always
are, in just eight days. It marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the book’s
publication, as well as the fiftieth anniversary of Orwell’s death.
The
Youth Theatre has always operated an open-access policy and anyone wishing to
join is encouraged to take part in the variety of projects on offer. The
educational importance of Youth Theatre work has always and will always take
first priority, although the highest possible standards of artistic excellence
are maintained. With the advent of Egglescliffe School’s successful Arts
College bid, the Youth Theatre has expanded its operation by introducing Youth
Theatre2, open to all pupils in Year 8 and 9. This runs
concurrently with the present Youth Theatre and aims to provide a gateway
for younger students with an interest in the Arts to experience Drama outside the curriculum. Senior Youth
Theatre, open to anyone between the ages 14-21, runs weekly on Wednesday
evenings from 6.30-9.30. First meeting will be on Wednesday September 13th
2000. Youth Theatre2 will run weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6.00
– 8.30. First meeting will be Tuesday September 12th 2000.
Youth Theatre is located in Lovell House, Egglescliffe School. Each course lasts
for one term. Course fees are £10 per student, payable on the first session of
each course. We look forward to seeing you there!
