Re: Animal Farm adapted by Peter Hall
The latest Egglescliffe Youth Theatre Summer School production will be performed at Egglescliffe School next week.
Animal Farm is an adaptation of George Orwell’s satirical novel, in which a group of farmyard animals revolt against their brutal human master and set up their own, ideal community. Of course, as with most best-laid plans things don’t work out quite as intended… This production was first performed by the National Theatre in the 1980s, and includes songs and music.
This is the fifteenth year that Egglescliffe Youth Theatre has run such a venture, in which an entire full-length production is rehearsed and presented to an audience in just over a week. This includes the building of all sets, the making of costumes and masks, even the learning of lines and songs. This year, over 60 local youngsters have been involved, coming from schools and colleges across the region. Tony Gears, Artistic Director of the Youth Theatre, said, "I’ve been particularly impressed this year with the range and enthusiasm of these young people. We have some excellent singers and dancers, not to mention the actors. You’ve got to be dedicated to turn up at 9.00 a.m. on a Bank Holiday Weekend!" Daniel Trotter, 15, said, "This is one of the most exciting shows I’ve been involved with. I play a crow… it’s harder than you’d think!" Phil Hodgson, designer, added, "Building an entire set, as well as fifty-odd masks in just a few days isn’t easy. However, we’ve been lucky to get such talented and artistic students."
Egglescliffe Youth Theatre is a non-profit-making, educational organisation based in Egglescliffe School Arts College. The Youth Theatre is committed to providing practical Drama and Theatre experiences to young people in the Stockton, Darlington and Middlesbrough areas, in particular those who have never taken part in production work. Already this Summer, the Youth Theatre has run a week-long Drama course. Animal Farm will run for three nights in September 2000, from Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th. Tickets are available from the school and cost £3.50 (£2.50 for students, jobseekers and OAPs).
The production will be staged at the school, in the recently-built Arts Theatre. Obviously, we would appreciate any publicity your organisation can offer us. The Youth Theatre runs courses throughout the year and we are keen to attract young people from as many different parts of the area as possible. Your support would assist us in achieving that.
